What your three-year-old learns at WCP
Three-year-olds learn at circle time, at tables, and during play. The Threes curriculum introduces real literacy and number skills alongside science, social studies, and creative expression - all grounded in Ohio's Early Learning Standards.
Reading and phonics
Children begin recognising and naming some letters, identifying rhymes, and understanding how books work. They learn to spot their own name in print, use pictures to help understand stories, and respond actively to read-alouds.
Writing
Children begin practising writing from top to bottom and start printing letters from their own name with assistance. They use mock letters and some conventional print as they explore writing as a meaningful activity for the first time.
Math
Counting to 10, touching and counting objects, and identifying numerals 0-5. Children name and describe shapes, sort and classify objects by size, colour, and shape, and begin developing real number sense through hands-on play.
Social and emotional development
Separating from parents, following classroom routines, demonstrating self-confidence, and showing cooperative behaviours like sharing and turn-taking. Children learn to respect authority and consider how their actions affect those around them.
Fine and gross motor skills
Using crayons, scissors, and clay builds the small muscle control children need for writing. Climbing, walking balance beams, catching balls, and jumping develop the coordination and physical confidence that carries into kindergarten.
Science and social studies
Weather, seasons, animals, plants, and life cycles through hands-on science. Social studies covers family heritage, classroom rules, community helpers, cultural traditions, and holidays. Children explore using magnets and magnifiers.
